Nitro Queen

Alright, this organism is not exactly a success (yet), but I wanted to share it before I got frustrated and gave up completely. :? The concept here is much the same as our popular drone/worker and queen, but usually it's a very one-sided relationship, with drones sacrificing themselves so the queen ...

Re: More modes and settings

Yeah, we could make some really amazing organisms with a hundred modes. Part of the reason I feel like 20 is a good limit now is that the genome editor doesn't give many tools for managing more than that. It would be neat to have some way of visualizing the entire lifecycle at once as a tree showing...

Re: More modes and settings

20 modes per genome seems just about right to me, not just in terms of application memory but in keeping track of them in my own head :D It's possible to do some really complex stuff with only 20 modes, and I think a big part of the game's appeal is finding ways to do more with less. I could see an ...

Re: Density Gradient Swimmers

In the same theme, I created these smart swimmers with high and low density buoycytes, to make them become specialized to the bottom or top of a substrate with a moderately strong density gradient and high gravity. I found that a single buoycyte doesn't really give enough buoyancy to significantly l...

Slitherers

I was curious to try a snake-like swimmer that used its stereocyte not for left/right orientation, but simply to detect food in front, and swim forward to reach it. I wanted a single string of cells, so I used the stemocyte trick to get forward-facing flagellos with hidden tails. slitherers.substrat...

Re: Smart Plant with Grazers

I returned to the original distraction behavior, where the plant detaches floating pieces of itself, then also continues spitting out bubbles to distract the swimmers from eating the main part of its stem. With the more orderly growth the plant has now, the distraction works much better; swimmers ar...

Re: Density Gradient Swimmers

Further experiments in density gradients led me to another nice visualization: density-spectrum.substrate density-spectrum.png Ten modes of photocytes spit out ten modes of buoycytes with a range of densities. I stuck with the snap values, and used the range -1.98 to +1.98. At the top and bottom are...

Re: Cyanide Worm

I took this challenge in what I think is the spirit Nitronomer intended, which is to try to kill the organism directly instead of preventing its cells from splitting by hitting the 1000-cell limit. If photocytes are prohibited (as they should be), then I can't see a way to do it. Every cell is conne...

Pulsating smart swimmer spitter

A while back, Nitronomer posted a challenge called Cyanide Worm , which I have not solved, but it included a neat photocyte core that would pulsate with a ring of splitting cells that immediately died and left quite an abundance of nutrients. I was especially impressed by its apparent immortality. I...
