Re: Smart Plant with Grazers

On topic, I found this fascinating and inspiring article on plant intelligence: The Intelligent Plant . Bwisialo this quote reminded me of your comment "Pick an organism that fits metaphorically in some way": "Metaphors help stimulate the investigative imagination of good scientists,” the British pl...

Re: Smart Plant with Grazers

Woo, my first video credit! I see your first couple variations don't use photocytes at all, but I'd definitely call them "plants". If it walks like a duck... I like the branching growth you have here (similar to Alast's "Creep"). In mid-life it begins to look kind of like a bonsai tree. Eventually t...

Re: Smart Plant with Grazers

But what happened to the "smart" part of the plant equation? Yeah, I kinda got sidetracked on the aesthetics. The main obstacle was making plants that are "smart" enough to minimize their own growth and leave room on the substrate for something else! :P Many of our other smart organisms need to ove...

Re: Smart Plant with Grazers

My first version of these grazers was a chaotic mess--nothing like the neat and orderly grass-like plant I originally wanted. It's surprisingly hard to get a photocyte-based organism that will grow in nice rows; on many attempts, the gluocyte-based roots would simply spread horizontaly without the p...

Re: Windmill

Kinda cool how long the flashing one lives with no photocytes. I guess density oscillation consumes no energy?

Smart Plant with Grazers

An idea struck me today--we have made so many smart swimmers, smart crawlers, smart queens and drones--but what about smart plants? My initial plan was a kind of sea grass, which would grow from the bottom rim of the substrate, and a grazer that survives on it. But each strand of the grass would inc...

Re: Reduced-Mode Smart Swimmers

OK, I lied. I couldn't leave it alone. Unticking "snap values" helped get settings that allowed the genome preview to work. Here's the best I've come up with: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kodgldcvd3dg8e8/wapcaplet-smart-swimmers-4-mode.substrate?dl=0 The stereocyte is in the front, and pops off to beco...

Re: Reduced-Mode Smart Swimmers

I fiddled with an attempted 4-mode version, and it looks like it may be possible, but the genome editor isn't showing a very accurate preview of what I'm actually getting on the substrate so it's frustrating trying to switch back and forth to fine tune the settings. I got a swimmer with 4 stereocyte...

Re: Reduced-Mode Smart Swimmers

I'll see if I can get a 4-mode one working. My concern is that the cells closer to the phagocyte head are more likely to have unwanted splits, and the phagocyte itself gains a lot of mass when it eats, no matter how low its nutrient priority is. A smart crawler needs fours cells in its final form. A...

Reduced-Mode Smart Swimmers

Lately I have been wondering about the minimum number of modes needed to develop a smart swimmer. At its most basic, a smart swimmer needs 4 modes in its mature form: Linear form: 1 for propulsion (flagello), 1 to steer (myo), 1 to detect food (stereo), 1 to gather nutrients (phago or photo) Kite or...
