You might be able to resolve the issue simply by changing the split mass of your rerpoductive / egg cell. Similar to what Alast said, which is probably correct, if you have a low split mass, your species is probably consuming / burning too much food / energy, in part because it's multiplying in numbers much more than necessary for the challenge. If so, increase try increasing that split mass. It's possible -- but extremely unlikely given the time frame -- that your split mass is too high: if they're collecting tons of mass before reproducing and then running out of enough food to reach that split mass after a while.

My avoider is simple three cell "Die if too close" -design. I tried turning swimmers also but they are too hard to control in low viscosity.

Flagellum intensity 0.12 and below wont reach limit or dies automatically. Anything above 0.13 makes cell count oscillate.

I have maxed the split mass, since one or two chunks are still enough to make my avoider split. chunks gained that cant be used are wasted, right?
This set also gives enough energy to newborns to evolve instantly.

Yeah, now that I know more about Salinity and other settings than I did when I created the first version, it was actually not that difficult making a substrate that works much better and feels much smoother. Now it actually does what I always wanted it to do :)

I'm curious, does your original solution still work? Or did you have to rework it? Or do you need an entirely new approach?

I'd have to tweak the original solution so that it gets enough nutrients, but I'm sure that strategy will still work. I also created a 2 Flagello swimmer with Stereo in front, Phago in middle, Stereo in back. Works like a charm! :)

Right, multiple Stereos, but there are various ways to do it, and this one simple and incredibly effective. Front for cell, with really high output. Population in the high 200s I think, and it just runs and runs. :)

Exactly what I do for my Avoider ;) Front Stereo runs from green really strongly, back Stereo lightly goes toward food.
