Wow, your mandala is really beautiful! :D Both visually and, for lack of a more precise word, mathematically. I like the 2-squared development. Did you put the max cell count at 2050 so that it would stop at 2048?

I tried to create some simple fractal structures once -- like the Sierpinski triangle or a simplified T-square fractal, but I never got very far. After the initial circle, your mandala's development is a bit like a fractal.

The swimmer chain looks especially like the second video, at 27 seconds from the beginning.
