Congratulations to Arthur Ashkin—the inventor of optical tweezers—for getting one half of this years Nobel prize in physics!

Well deserved prize considering how much use we have of them :D.

Don't forget Frances Arnold getting one half of the Cheistry Nobel Prize for her studies on how to infect organisms with viruses to change their behavior to desired results ;-)

@Alast, haha, was it even announced yet when i wrote? Anyways, she got the prize for evolution of enzymes (much like the breeding II challenge), whereas Winter and Smith got it for phage display.

But good point, i should definitely make a thread about that, outside my field of expertise though so i'll need some time to read up on it.

Don't forget medicine, literature, peace, and economic sciences.

There's no nobel prize in literature or economic sciences, but if the medicine or peace prizes are cell lab related i'll mention them too :).

Maybe it was just about to be announced when you wrote it, not sure ;-)

The way I understand it she made bacteria produce certain enzymes by inserting the according DNA via a virus. Simply put and if I got it right ;-)

At their website, the literature and economic prizes were there.

- indeed. However, the "Nobel prize in economics" is not a Nobel prize and I think calling it such is both deceiving people and is unfair to Alfred Nobel. It was invented by the Swedish central bank "in the memory of Nobel" but in practice they are just using the Nobel prize brand without his permission. Who knows whether Alfred would have wanted to encourage the kind of stuff those laureates are studying? Also I find the achievements of the economy prize winners much less impressive than the actual Nobel prizes so I think it it also devalues the Nobel prize.

About literature, the "Swedish academy" that awards this prize, is in crisis and will not award a prize this year, and no one knows what will happen in the future. Basically they have some old rules that state how new members are elected, basically when the current members die they are replaced. There are some real creeps in this academy (basically protecting a now convicted rapist) so since the reasonable members of the academy could not get rid of these creeps they left the academy and now only the creeps are left and unable to award the prize themselves. Note that the "Swedish academy" is not related to the "Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences" that awards the Science prizes.
