Beginners Challenges

Post by Alast » Thu May 26, 2016 1:44 pm

This thread has the purpose of providing a collection of challenges created for new players to gain more experience with different genome settings. The posted challenges should emphazise 1 or 2 of those settingsto allow for an easy learning experience and not too difficult to solve. So the intended solutions shouldn't require too many modes and cell types but rather motivate to play around with those that are available within the first half of the original in game challenges. Of course, if you have a great idea for a later cell, that's very welcome, too ;)

I'd like to encourage everyone to post their challenge ideas here as we can all learn from each other. And especially those players not too experienced yet might have a better view on what can be hard for them to figure out than those already having solved all challenges.

Please use the following template for your challenges:

Code: Select all

Name: Give your challenge a descriptive name

Description: Challenge description, introductory text

Substrate: Link to the substrate

Objective (difficulty): Goal description

Max Cells inserted: Number

Cell Type allowed: Cell types (restrictions)
Let's have fun :)

Name: Extinction

Description: There already is an alga living on this substrate. Can you create one that is strong enough to oust it?

Substrate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ndoac2wflxxu8 ... trate?dl=0

Objective (easy): Leave no initial cells on the plate

Max Cells inserted: 3

Cell Type allowed: Photocytes

Name: Extinction II

Description: On this substrate with extremely low viscosity a Phagocyte organism is bouncing around like crazy. Can you create a species that can take that place?

Substrate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/afggn3v76zdc4 ... trate?dl=0

Objective (easy): Leave no initial cells on the substrate.

Max Cells inserted: 3

Cell Type allowed: Phagocytes

Name: Extinction III

Description: Same substrate as Extinction II but with a different objective

Substrate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/afggn3v76zdc4 ... trate?dl=0

Objective (medium): Clean the substrate leaving no cells on it.

Max Cells inserted: 3

Cell Type allowed: Devorocytes

Name: Parasitic

Description: The substrate is similar to Extinction II and III but cells die at the edges. Can you make a parasite survive for 500h?

Substrate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rergkona7vne4 ... trate?dl=0

Objective (medium): Have your organism live for 500h

Max Cells inserted: 1

Cell Type allowed: Glueocytes

Nice work. :) II, III and Parasitic remind me a bit of Squares, but easier and more intentionally illustrative.

I think Extinction I is perhaps less usefully illustrative than the others -- maybe because one of the Algae challenges deals with a similar issue.

II is a particularly nice illustration and complement of Macrophages I and II.

III is interesting because it's not a simple as it might look at first -- though plenty simple -- and can show symbiotic parasitic relationships as well as utterly destructive ones.

Parasitic is also good in that it focuses specifically on symbiotic relationships and figuring out how to get a parasite to survive.

They're all illustrative and good for learning, but I'd say II and Parasitic are the best and most interesting in this respect. Just some first-impression feedback. ;)

Thank you :) I hope it will help keeping new players engaged and help them learn some of the core concepts we're dealing with here.

The idea behind Extinction I and II is to show how different split mass settings can make the difference in one way or the other with Extinction I favoring lower split masses and II favoring higher split masses. If you have a better idea for favoring lower split masses, I'm happy to see it :)

And if you have ideas for other core principle challenges, please add them here ;)

Right, what I was referring to is that Algae II deals with advantages of low split mass, and Extinction I mostly seems to demonstrate the same sort of thing in a different way. ;)

Name: Overpopulate

Description: The Lipocyte is a multi purpose cell. It can store energy very well but can also be used for other purposes. You might want to utilize the Lipocyte in different 2 ways to solve this challenge

Substrate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/3kurugattjnmb ... trate?dl=0

Objective (difficult): Reach 600 cells on this substrate (1000 are possible)

Max Cells inserted: 5

Cell Type allowed: Phagocytes, Flagellocytes, Lipocytes
