Cultivating Coexistence – “Chaos” Substrate

Description: The Cultivating Coexistence challenge is to randomly generate indefinitely coexisting genomes by seeding the given substrate using only the “Contaminate with random cells” check box. Increasingly challenging objectives can be achieved by changing only these controls:
  • the “Radiation level”
  • the available Gene Pool: of “Cell Types”
  • the "Only point mutations" check-box
  • the “Substrate temperature”
Substrate: ... trate?dl=0

Objective: By inserting only random cells in the first 100h of the substrate age, find as many genomes as you can that can coexist together for a 1,000h period by adjusting only the radiation level and/or restricting the available cell types.

The goal is more artistic than technical; Find random combinations of different genomes that appear to be able to coexist indefinitely.

When you think you have a solution, set the “Radiation Level” to zero and run the simulation for an additional 1,000h period. Then, please share the variety of different solutions that are emergent as a *.substrate file.
  • Objective (Easy): Find 1 genome that can survive for a 1,000h period with zero radiation.
  • Objective (Average): Find 2 genomes that can coexist for a 1,000h period with zero radiation.
  • Objective (Hard): Find 3 genomes that can coexist for a 1,000h period with zero radiation.
  • Objective (Improbable): Find 4 genomes that can coexist for a 1,000h period. (I’ve not done this yet)
  • Objective (Impossible): Find 5 genomes that can coexist for a 1,000h period. (I actually don’t even know if this is possible. If you prove me otherwise, I’ll name this level of difficulty after you, and make 6 be “impossible” instead!)
  • Objective (Bonus): Bonus points are given if the genome has appealing colors or a bizarre life cycle.
  • Objective (Super Extra): Study the behavior of each genome you discover and name them. Super Extra points are given if the genome name is witty or funny.
Max Cells inserted: 0 ZERO! (You may not manually insert any cells from the GENOME tab. You must seed the substrate using only the “Contaminate with random cells” check box. See Additional Rules below.)

Cell Type allowed: All Cell Types are allowed. However, I have not personally unlocked them all as yet, so you may need to check the box if you want to use more advanced Cell Types.

Additional Rules: You must seed the substrate using only the “Contaminate with random cells” check box. However, you may only turn this checkbox ON during the first 100h of “Substrate age.” When Substrate age is greater than 100h you must turn “Contaminate with random cells” OFF for the remainder of the simulation.

If your genome dies out with a substrate age greater than 100h, you must sterilize the substrate, at which time you may again seed with “Contaminate with random cells” as the substrate age is less than 100h again.

After the first 100h, you must attain the Objective(s) by changing only the “Radiation level,” the available “Cell Types,” the "Only point mutations" check-box, or the “Substrate temperature,” controls.

When you find a multi-genome coexisting solution turn the “radiation level” down to zero for a 1,000h period to clearly define how many unique genomes you have co-existing in equilibrium at the end of that period. If you observe that your multi-genome substrate will probably not persist indefinitely, although technically reached the end of the 1,000h period, this is considered a weak solution.

You may continue to subject your previous solutions to more radiation and incubation in order to achieve higher levels of difficulty or to find more interesting emergent genomes from a common ancestor.

TIPS: Start with the substrate temperature set to “Incubate.” Add a little radiation to start with. Sterilize, then momentarily click ON then OFF the “Contaminate with random cells” to add about 100 randomly generated genomes. Stay on the SUBSTRATE tab and watch the “substrate age” and “number of cells.” If the number of cells increases beyond 200, you might have a viable genome to start cultivating. However, you are likely to reach the 100h substrate age quickly with no viable genome. You will need to “sterilize” and “Contaminate with random cells” multiple times before you can get a cell life cycle that is stable enough to survive for 1,000h, so I recommend staying on the SUBSTRATE tab until the number of cells indicates you have a viable genome.

Focus on getting an EASY solution first and save it. You can reload the EASY substrate and continue your progress toward more difficult goals. So, any time you can be patient enough to wait 1k hours you can save your progress, even if it is still only an EASY solution. After a while you build up a library of different EASY solutions that you can go back to and try to cultivate more.

Remember you can turn OFF more advanced “Cell Types," and you may use the "Only point mutations" check-box if you like.

Woah nice. I love this challenge. That's a cool substrate.
Tried a few times and my I only managed to reach level 3. I'll definitely try again.

Here's my substrate. If only there's a photocyte!!! ... trate?dl=0

I have considered this. I have not needed to use "Only point mutations" to get solutions. I'm going to say, "no," for now.

:!: EDIT: I've reconsidered this. The spirit of the game is to use only the genome related controls on the SUBSTRATE tab. The rules already allow you to select whatever Cell Types (o) you want and adjust the radiation level. Being allowed to manipulate the "Only point mutations" check-box seems to be within the spirit of this game! :D

I am editing the rules to allow the use of the "Only point mutations" check-box.

After additional exposure to varying amounts of radiation, another interesting pattern arose, but still only a single genome solution. From Complimentary Fizz 1.73kh ancestor.

After WAY MORE exposure to varying amounts of radiation, an interesting variation in the pattern arose, but, alas, STILL only a single genome solution. From the Complimentary Fizz 5.84kh ancestor.

I like how this one appears to shoot little missiles out occasionally. This mechanism allowed it to spread to both sides of the substrate. Should an aggressive Devorcyte emerge, it can cause an substrate wide extinction event. So, having the Photocyte colonies on both sides of the substrate provides a certain amount of redundancy to keep the genome from going extinct.

Ancestor is actually the Complimentary Fizz 5.84kh. So, THIS time around I was able to achieve an Average solution by 8.40kh.

It's pink, but it's got this... "sinister" quality... Don't look at it straight in the eye!
An interesting start. Let's see how far we can take it...

Finally, a pale, slightly blue carnivorous playmate... let's call them Pale Hunger. The Pale Hunger is completely dependent on consuming a consistent stream of cells from the more "evolved version" of Sinister Pink to feed its life cycle.

This is an "average" solution with 2 genomes coexisting. Both genomes are emergent from the common ancestor solution from Sinister Pink (1) 1.71kh. I turned up the radiation again and ran the simulation until I saw a colony of pale Devorcytes form then backed the radiation down to zero for another 1kh to isolate these two coexisting genomes.

What is interesting is that I ran this solution some more, trying to get a 3rd genome to emerge, and the Sinister Pink actually "evolved" a way to escape the Pale Hunger, which caused the Pale Hunger genome to die out and set me back a step. Because Sinister Pink is the ancestor genome, the seeds for Pale Hunger are still in the Sinister Pink genome and is likely to re-emerge with more radiation and incubation. This genome is a good candidate to get a 3 genome solution if I can get the Pale Hunger along with some kind of Photocyte to also emerge from the same Sinister Pink ancestor.

It's green. It's careless with it's waste. "Just throw it in the ocean!" they say. We'll see how far they get with an attitude like that...

Nice! Got lucky. 2 additional coexisting genomes emerged about the same time from the Green Litterbug 1.21kh ancestor.
The "Sky Litterbug" is clearly related to the Green Litterbug but has discovered it can throw it's trash into space!
The "Violet Photon" is a Photocyte colony that has found a tenuous niche on the right side of the substrate.

This is a "hard" solution with 3 genomes coexisting. All 3 genomes are emergent from the ancestor Green Litterbug 1.21kh. The "Violet Photon" almost died out a couple of times due to getting knocked around violently by the different Litterbugs, but the all 3 did coexist a full 1kh period with no radiation.

Cream Soda! I'm never going to look at you the same again... This solution has a great deal of visual interest to me. I like the interaction of these two species of genomes; how it changes shape and jiggles.

I like how the Buoyocytes add more ballast to reach deeper depths to get to that food source that their brothers haven't reached.

I had to investigate the genomes on this one closer. I see 3 different kinds of Photocytes occupying different niches coexisting in equilibrium. The species of Photocyte on the right has no Bouyocyte in it's life cycle. The species of Photocyte in the middle has a blue Devorocyte in it's life cycle and a higher concentration of Bouyocytes, giving it the density it needs to stay at the top. The species of Photocyte on the left has no Devorocyte in it's life cycle. The 4th genome is obviously the only one not eating the light. A fascinating sample with potential to achieve a more clear 5-genome solution, to be sure. I will continue to work with this one...
