A) There are ways to prevent the Devorocytes from dying. They could have Photocytes incorporated and not even need swimmer victims at all. The important thing is thst they kill the swimmers.

B) If you are putting your swimmer on the substrate with other people's swimmers, using a semi-immortal swimmer won't necessarily prevent it or its non-immortal offspring from getting starved by competitors. It's not a challenge where you have to live x hrs. It's a competition where your species' efficiency and strategy has to work better than other species.

Cyanyde secrocytes are a better option, as devoroucytes don't consume when full.

They continue consuming. I think. Don't they? But Secrocytes might be better anyway. It would depend on how it was set up. Cyanide can be a lot less forgiving, but the visuals sure are fun, and they would create an even less familiar scenario, in a good way.

The substrate could have modules like these. They alternate between Devorocytes and Secrocytes.

Another possibility I consider was to have a module produce two new modules at the moment of old age death. So, there would be an increasing number if the time ran long.

Oh god. no nitrates? . Now thats a real challenge!, the increasing of modules is also really interesting! It will be really thrilling to watch that kind of competition.
