Conquering II

Post by bwisialo » Tue Oct 06, 2015 5:01 am

This challenge has an unusual species that must be killed off. The substrate has no nitrates and cells die when they hit the edge of the petri dish.

Please don't post links to your solutions, but feel free to post hints as well as general descriptions and images of your solutions.

To attempt the challenge, you need to complete "19: Slippery Slope" in Cell Lab, which gives you access to Nitrocytes.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/uogayjcc2e0rj ... trate?dl=0
Objective: Can you kill off the species on this substrate?

Number of Inserted cells allowed (Difficult): 30

Number of Inserted cells allowed (Very Difficult): 3

Cell types allowed: All

Hints: There are a few main strategies. One is a strong well-adapted Flagellocyte-Nitrocyte-Phagocyte swimmer, or a swimmer that starts from and spits out a Nitrocyte. Another is a Nitrocyte swimmer that starts as and spits out Devorocytes.
Other solutions are always possible :) .

This is a "pre-beta" version ;) Does your solution complete the challenge if you insert only 3 initial cells?

Hints

What you need to complete this challenge should -- hopefully -- be fairly obvious: a Nitrocyte swimmer similar to the one used to complete Harsh Conditions II in CL. I used "Kill cells at edge" so that this Conquering challenge would require evolving a Nitrocyte swimmer to this environment.

With a strong Nitrocyte swimmer, it's not that hard to complete the "Difficult" version of this challenge -- 30 initial cells.

The "Very Difficult" version -- 3 initial cells -- is probably possible with a standard Nitrocyte swimmer (edit: Alast's solution showed me that it is definitely possible), but it takes an extremely strong one. Another option is a Nitrocyte swimmer that starts as and spits out Devorocytes. I'm not sure which approach is best -- it may depend on what sorts of species you are best at developing.

Finally got a solution for this one :) Again I was thinking too complicated. So I went simple and designed a genome that can conquer this substrate with just 1 cell if placed well.
Perfection hasnt reached me yet, but its trying hard!

Nice. :) What were you thinking?

I kept thinking I'd have to kill your organism actively. But I was simply able to exploit a flaw in its genome to outgrow it.

Perfectly on point! :)

At some point, I considered using a standard Nitro swimmer as the species to be conquered. But I didn't want to use a species that could be taken down by Devorocytes, and I didn't want the solution to be a superior version of the same species in the substrate (a Nitro swimmer that conquers a lesser Nitro swimmer). And at some point I recall thinking that adding the Keratinocyte would create two solution strategies: a standard Nitro swimmer or a Devorocyte spitter. I was making a stab in the dark trying to make the two strategies equal in difficulty. You may be right that the standard Nitro swimmer is the easier route to take.

I briefly posted a v2 but then yanked it. You said you weren't sure how strong your Nitro swimmer is?!?! It's extremely freakin' strong! :) The Objective in Harsh II is to reach 400. In that challenge your Nitro swimmer hits 620 and maintains a population above 400! Far above and beyond what's necessary for Harsh II.

So, I'm still happy with the challenge. And your solution deserves serious respect. :)
