Save the Phagocyte

Post by Alast » Sun Dec 13, 2015 2:14 pm

Description: In this challenge you have a single Phagocyte in the center of the substrate. There is only one problem. The substrate doesn't have any nutrients!

Substrate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/to322g68iddvz ... trate?dl=0

Objective (medium): Phagocyte Count of 2

Objective (difficult): Phagocyte Count of 8

Objective (very difficult): Phagocyte Count of 12

Objective (extremely difficult): Phagocyte Count of 24

Objective (obsessive): beat the high score

Max Cells inserted: 1

Cell Type allowed: all except Phagocytes and Virocytes

To beat the high score please provide a screen shot and an exact count of the Phagocytes.

Current High Score: 81

Hard to believe this challenge has been here for more than a year with no replies!

I took a brief crack at this a few weeks ago and only got up to 4. Today I took a more serious attempt, and got several wins in the upper 50s. So I had to go for "obsessive" and got it up to 81 cells :-D

At first glance it seems like a big blob of gluocytes and photocytes would get the job done, but it only leads to a few splits before nutrients become too diffused. The difficult part here is the dense connections among the phagocytes. Many connected cells means very diffuse nutrients, so it takes a fast and focused infusion to a single phagocyte to make it split.

This seemingly simple challenge led to a large and beautiful meta-organism--a siphonophore of sorts. The green phagocytes are a kind of parasite, but the helper organism also needs to have a parasite to feed--otherwise, they become misshappen, useless loners:

There's another thread -- the initial thread -- with more discussion of this challenge. I think it's "Save the Phagocyte, Unleashed". Nice work without using Virocytes. :)

Yes, true. I did split it up because you were too good with your Virocytes ;-)
