1. SImply add neurocytes along the spine that react to S1 (example) and produce S1. The signal will fade, but much slower. I tried to translate the post, this is what i came up with.

Two-celled swimmers
Put a phagocyte into a petry dish and it becomes a swimmer. Simple, right?
