Hi! I made this ecosystem that contains two genomes
-Algae
It's a swimmer that goes into the light and can't reproduce until it's near the wall (prevents overpopulation).
When reproducing it makes two eggs and secrocyte (protease). This makes other algae fall apart and die.

-Algae-Predator
It's a swimmer (again) that eats the eggs that failed to hatch.
It takes time for the devorocyte to be used.
Now the interesting part is that this organism is afraid from light.

-Algae-Swimmer
It's a swimmer that reproduce with gametes.

The number of species is not as important as the quality.
For the substrate, maybe you can reduce the amount of light and food but increase the salinity.
