Well, the Mutation cell allows the green Phagocyte to have a role / function that it could not otherwise have.
There is no other way to both (1) keep the Buoyocyte adhered to the Phagocyte on its left and (2) have the string of cells break / split when the green Phagocyte appears in the middle of the string. The Mutation cell is what allows this to happen, because the Mutation cell only adheres the Buoyocyte.
To put it another way, lets say the green Phagocyte simply split into a Buoyocyte-Phagocyte pair. If the Buoyocyte wasn't ticked "Keep adhesion," the string would not get to have a Buoyocyte attached to it. If "Keep adhesion" was ticked, the string would be unbroken.
So... the Mutation cell allows you to modify the role / function that another cell has in the reproduction cycle???
Could it be a weight? The opposite of a buoycyte? Or an equaliser? So it changes the buoycytes density as it goes up and down to stay at the right level?

Oh, right. It seems make the Buoyocyte's Density change over time. But how would it change other types of cells over time?
Could it be a variable change/senser. So attached to the buoycyte, it changes the density of it once it reaches a certain level, and again when it goes to low.
